Teenagers need physical activity. How can we motivate them to be active instead of sitting on the couch?
Physical activity is important for:
* stronger bones and muscles
* a healthy and slim body
* mental health (feeling happy, optimistic and resilient), building self-esteem
What can we do?
* we need to set a good example ourselves; be active, go walking, running, biking etc.
* do you like to be active? Show it and explain why exercise makes you feel better (mention the endorphin kick)
* encourage your teen to be active with his friends: play soccer, basketball, biking, (ice)skating, play tennis etc.
* give your teen control over how he decides to be physical active. They want the power to make their own decisions
* once they get started, many teens enjoy the feeling of well-being, reduced stress and increased strenght and energy
* support you teen’s choices by providing equipment, transport and companionship
* help him to find an excercise or a team sport that fits in his schedule
* limit the time spent in sedentary activities, including watching TV, using the computer, and playing video games.
